Mayor Janice S. Mironov proclaimed Fire Prevention Week, thanking all of East Windsor’s dedicated volunteer fire company members, and recognized 2018 Firefighters of the Year, East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Evan Dorfman and East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, Chief Mario Batista.  

Mayor Mironov issued a Proclamation recognizing Firefighters of the Year Evan Dorfman and Mario Batista, selected by their respective Companies for their dedicated volunteer fire company service, “expressing deep appreciation for their special and invaluable contributions and extraordinary dedication.”  She noted that volunteer firefighters Evan Dorfman and Mario Batista “have devoted countless hours to public service, earning them much respect from Fire Company members and the entire East Windsor community."

Evan Dorfman joined East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 in May 1997 when he moved into the district, after serving with East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company #2 for six years. Evan Dorfman has held several leadership positions in the Fire Company, including Engineer, Trustee, Fire Police Lieutenant and Vice President of Fire Company #1.  He demonstrated outstanding commitment in 2018, responding to 299 calls, attending 27 training drills, in addition to attending numerous company work details and meetings, over the past year.  Evan also has served on numerous company committees including the Membership Committee, Special Events Committee, Santa Open House Committee, and the Good & Welfare Committee.  On December 11, 2018, Evan Dorfman was part of a CPR save at the Melvin H. Kreps middle school during a school performance, springing into action with several others to perform CPR and use an AED to save a man’s life.    Evan Dorfman's diligent efforts responding to calls and participating in company business, and his excellent efforts in all aspects of his service have contributed enormously to the success of the fire company.

Chief Mario Batista joined East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 in May 2004 and has been involved in emergency services, including fire and EMS, for the past 37 years.   Mario Batista was appointed as Acting Fire Chief in October 2016 and thereafter was elected as Fire Chief in December 2016.  He has dedicated himself to helping others in times of crisis, assisting in rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, volunteering as the Multi Agency Coordinator for the New Jersey EMS Task Force, and serving during several deployments with the New Jersey EMS Task Force and the New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, the Papal visit in 2015, and Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria relief in the US Virgin Islands in 2017.  Since 2016, Mario Batista has responded to 1,071 fire calls and has participated in and conducted over 180 drills, totaling over 420 man hours.   Mario Batista’s tireless efforts responding to calls, participating in drills, and undertaking leadership roles demonstrates his heartfelt comittment to East Windsor volunteer Fire Company #2 and the community.

Mayor Mironov further noted, firefighters in East Windsor are 100% volunteer and are always looking for new members and support.  Citizens can join and become part of East Windsor volunteer fire companies by calling Fire Company No. 1 at (609) 448-5487 or Fire Company No. 2 at (609) 443-5130.
