East Windsor Township Presents Annual Business Awards

Mayor Janice S. Mironov recently presented the East Windsor Township 2018 Annual Business Awards to Berkshire Bank, Hovione, Exeter Property Group and Shiseido America.  The purpose of the annual Township awards program is to recognize local businesses that have made special efforts to improve or contribute to the community.  The categories of Township award recognition are Community Contributions and Service, Community Enhancement and Green and Sustainable Practices.

Mayor Janice S. Mironov presented a 2018 Business Award for Special Community Contributions and Service to Berkshire Bank, accepted by Tom Lannigan, Regional Manager, and Pamela Simmons, East Windsor Branch Manager.  Berkshire Bank, located at 18 Princeton Hightstown Road, through the Berkshire Bank Foundation, has supported many community programs and groups, including annually as a Platinum Sponsor of the East Windsor Community Summer Event Series consisting of concerts, family night, egg hunt, and Independence Day Celebration.  Berkshire Bank also has provided grants in the East Windsor area community to Womanspace toward transitional housing, to the Joshua Harr Shane Foundation in support of the Stroke Gym at RWJ Hospital in Hamilton, and to Rise for a food pantry database system.  Additionally, Berkshire Bank contributed $2,500 and volunteers for a Bike Build program for Better Beginnings and through their XTeam Volunteer program have given over 100 volunteer hours assisting at the Rise Thrift Store and for the Better Beginnings “Shining Star Gala.”  Berkshire Bank also will facilitate the GreenPath Financial Literacy program at the East Windsor Senior Center, beginning in summer 2019, to provide financial education and counseling to empower people to lead financially healthy lives.

Mayor Mironov stated, “Berkshire Bank has been an outstanding corporate citizen in East Windsor Township, always ready to step up and lend their support for numerous community programs and activities.  We appreciate their substantial involvement and recognize their continuing company commitment to our community’s needs.”

Mayor Mironov presented a 2018 Business Award for Special Contributions as a Good Neighbor and Commitment to East Windsor to Hovione, accepted by Filipe Tomas, General Manager.  Hovione, located at 40 Lake Drive, is a Portugal-based pharmaceutical company that recently completed a major expansion in East Windsor in 2018 with a new Research and Development Center, doubling the size of their facility with a 28,000 square foot addition and doubling total employment with the addition of 60 new jobs.  Hovione is an active community corporate citizen, including as a Gold Sponsor of the East Windsor Community Summer Events Series of concerts, family night, egg hunt and Independence Day Celebration, and has donated $7,500 to support special programs and events throughout the year at the East Windsor Senior Center.

Mayor Mironov stated, “Hovione has maintained open, positive communication with residents, inviting neighbors to tour their facility to share information about their operations.  Hovione’s long term commitment to East Windsor Township was underscored this past year by the company expansion which doubled their facility size as well as work force adding 60 new jobs.  Notably, Hovione continues their support of community programs and activities within the Township.”
Mayor Mironov presented a 2018 Business Award for Special Community Enhancement Contributions to Exeter Property Group, accepted by Ken Iriana, Property Manager.  This award recognizes businesses that provided an added community value such as extraordinary job creation or positive promotion of East Windsor.  Exeter Property Group, a real estate investment management company, completed the transformational redevelopment of the former National Lead site on Wyckoff Mills Road in 2018 with construction and opening of a new sizable modern commercial facility of 634,000 square feet, generating 150 new jobs, and housing Modway Furniture, a major distributor of livingroom, diningroom, bedroom, outdoor and office furnishings.  The redevelopment removed from the long vacated site a visible rusty elevated water storage tank and demolished the deteriorated unusable buildings.  The redevelopment by Exeter transformed a longtime eyesore in the Township into a modern and aesthetically attractive commercial center visible from the NJ Turnpike, creating new job opportunities and generating a significant stream of annual revenue to support the municipal budget and taxpayers.
Mayor Mironov stated,” Exeter Property Group was instrumental in the redevelopment of the former National Lead site, transforming a long time eyesore into a sizable modern and attractive major commercial ratable visible from the Turnpike.  This transformation of a major property in the Township has yielded significant annual revenue for the benefit of taxpayers and major job generation for the area.”

Mayor Mironov presented a 2018 Business Award for Special Community Enhancement Contributions for Green and Sustainable Practices to Shiseido America, accepted by Ladislav Hanzes, Plant Manager and Vice President of Manufacturing. Shiseido, a global skin care and cosmetics company based in Japan which established operations in East Windsor in 1998, has completed a series of expansions, including global designation as America’s Innovation Center, and relocation of company operations and personnel, resulting today in a 310,580 square foot facility that is home to 800 employees.  Shiseido installed roof top and modest ground base solar arrays as well as other energy savings initiatives, reducing annual energy usage by 70% with significant cost savings, for which they received the New Jersey Environmental Excellence Award.  A longtime environmental leader, Shiseido has held ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management since 2000, and in 2017 achieved a solid waste recycling rate of 81% as well as an 87.9% reduction of non-hazardous wastewater per month, providing further business cost savings.  Shiseido America is a certified member of the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry, and in 2014 was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Sustainable Business by Sustainable Raritan River Collaborative, Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.  Locally, the company sponsors the annual Earth Day Recycling Poster Contest for elementary school students, and company employee volunteers have donated and planted flowers and shrubbery at the East Windsor Senior Center each spring and fall for the past ten years.  Shiseido is an active corporate community citizen in many other ways, including as a regular sponsor of the East Windsor Community Summer Event Series of concerts, family night, egg hunt and Independence Day Celebration as well as providing financial and volunteer support for Womanspace activities.

Mayor Mironov stated, “Shiseido, a prior Business Award recipient in 2007, has long been recognized as an environmental leader not only in our community but globally.  Shiseido has continually sought out environmentally friendly approaches to product development and manufacturing, with recent initiatives significantly reducing non-hazardous wastewater, increasing solid waste recycling rates, and expanding existing solar arrays to reduce annual energy usage by 70%.  Shiseido’s commitment to environmental sustainability has earned the company numerous recognitions and awards, reduced operating costs and reaping benefits to the community and the environment.”
