East Windsor Township Recognizes Panera Bread With Litter Free Award

FOR RELEASE:  August 3, 2021

Mayor Janice S. Mironov and the East Windsor Clean Communities Committee awarded a Certificate of Recognition for “Outstanding Efforts to Keep East Windsor Township Litter Free” to Panera Bread, located on Route 130 South. The purpose of the award is to recognize a local business that has made special efforts to keep East Windsor Township litter free.

Mayor Mironov stated, “Panera Bread, a popular spot frequented by many people in our area and situated in a prominent visible location on a major Township roadway, always keeps its property and parking lot free of litter and trash enhancing our municipal appearance.  Panera Bread has a well maintained landscaped area with an active outdoor dining area, drive-thru and curbside delivery.”  Mayor Mironov added, “We appreciate Panera for being a successful socially and environmentally conscious restaurant which takes an active interest not only in the look of our town but in community service.”

According to the 2020 Panera Annual Report, Panera has taken significant measures to create packaging free of certain substances, which could pose potential health risks to guests and emphasizes efficient sustainable packaging that uses less material, constructed with renewable or recyclable materials, and/or is recyclable or compostable after use.  Panera added the How2Recycle symbol, a standardized label that provides guests with recycling instructions for what can be recycled and, just as important, what items are not recyclable on their to-go packaging and monitors recycling efforts across all of the locations for solid waste, recycling and composting.

Panera was responsible for 930,000+ freshly prepared meals and in-kind donations to Feeding America food banks, 132,000+ lunches made for school food programs, 730,000 meals provided to frontline workers, and 21,000 bakery-cafe associate hours in helping prepare meals for COVID-19 relief.   Becoming a founding member of the Healthy Living Coalition, Panera is addressing global nutrition and food insecurity that disproportionately impacts underserved communities.
