  4. STAY ALERT ON THE ROADS: DEER MATING SEASON IS HERE. Fall is peak deer mating season in New Jersey, which means deer are more active and unpredictable — especially during dawn and dusk. Collisions often increase in October and November, so take extra care when driving.
    Safety Tips for Drivers:
    • Stay alert at dawn and dusk: Deer are most active during early morning and evening hours.
    • Slow down and stay cautious in wooded or rural areas: Watch for “Deer Crossing” signs.
    • Use high beams when possible: They help you spot deer from a distance — but dim them for oncoming traffic.
    • Keep a safe distance: Don’t tailgate and allow time to react if a vehicle in front stops suddenly.
    • Avoid swerving: If a collision seems unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving can cause more serious accidents.
    • Watch for more deer: They often travel in groups — if you see one, others may be nearby.
    • Stay focused: Avoid using handheld devices and keep your eyes on the road.
    • Always buckle up: Seatbelts are your best protection in any collision.
    • Report deer-vehicle collisions: Contact local law enforcement if a crash occurs
