- Special Notice from Environmental Commission: Stormwater Runoff. The East Windsor Environmental Commission Advises Township Residents on How They Can Help Keep Our Stormwater Clean. Stormwater runoff is precipitation (rain and snowmelt) that flows over land or impervious surfaces. In the natural environment, most is absorbed by trees and plants or permeates into the ground, resulting in stable stream flows and good water quality. In the built environment, rain that falls on a roof, driveway, patio or lawn runs off the surface more rapidly, picking up pollutants (such as oil, fertilizers, pesticides, dirt/sediment, trash and animal waste) and flows untreated into local streams. Contaminated stormwater is the #1 cause of water pollution in NJ.
Homeowners can help keep our stormwater clean by:
• Reducing impervious areas and planting native trees and plants which help infiltrate stormwater and increase evaporation and transpiration.
• Following proper lawn care practices and carefully using and disposing of pesticides and lawn chemicals.
• Managing stormwater on-site with rain gardens, rain barrels and similar practices and keeping storm water collection drains clear of debris.
More information on managing stormwater on your property can be obtained on the NJDEP Clean Water website (CLICK HERE).
