- Special Notice from East Windsor Environmental Commission: Box Tree Moth. Environmental Commission is reminding residents about the threat of the box tree moth on boxwoods. The box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) is an invasive pest that can significantly damage and potentially kill boxwood (Buxus species) plants if left unchecked. Detections have been confirmed in several states including New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, thus posing a serious threat to boxwoods in New Jersey. Signs of box moth infestation include:
• Defoliation of leaves and bark damage
• Webbing – similar to spider webs but thicker
• Caterpillars that are lime green with black and white stripes (1.5 inches full grown)
• Adult moths that are mostly white with a wide brown border on the wings, active mostly at night
Things you can do include inspecting your boxwoods weekly from April through October, removing and double bagging infested materials, and reporting suspected sightings with clear photos to the NJ Department of Agriculture – Division of Plant Industry.
